The Idea

What is Transition Year?

Transition Year is the fourth year of secondary school in Ireland where the focus shifts from academia to experiential learning and personal development. "TY Students" take part in various extracurricular activites throughout the year and are tasked with arranging short term work experience placements with a company or institution of interest.

The Problem

The problems many TY students face during the year is one, finding interesting activities to do and two, finding a rewarding work experience placement. Because of this, some students finish the year feeling like they didn't get as much out of the year as they would have liked. They feel like the year was wasted or a "doss".

The Solution

So, while my friends and I were in Transition Year (2016) we decided to provide a solution to the problem by creating TY.ie. We found through our research that the main reason these problems exist is simply because the many opportunities that are provided in Transition Year are oftentimes unknown to students. Hence, by providing a resource which gathers work experience opportunities, Transition Year competitions, programmes and more, TY.ie has become the go to website for all things transition year accumalating thousands of impressions every month.

The Branding

We divided the responsibilities of the website between us. I took on the design of the branding and the website as well as helping with technical aspects and marketing. The TY.ie logo, the TY Tie, is inspired by the acronym for Transition Year and name of the website, TY, as well as a common symbol used for education and work, a tie. We wanted a logo that would be easily recognisable and adaptable. The current logo is the second iteration.

The Website

TY.ie was made using the WordPress engine, plugins and custom code. I wanted to create a website that would stand out from other educational websites and provide students with a modern, responsive and enjoyable experience. Most importantly I wanted to emphasises that the website was made for TY students by TY students.
